MENTOR OF THE YEAR 2010
“ My Heart Felt Appreciation for Our Mentor” She is the daughter that I never had. She is not only good “to” her mentee but she is good “with” her. She is a person who shows and displays responsibility. She makes sure that her mentee gets all her projects done “on time” for school. Whatever her mentee needs to complete her projects her mentor will ensure she has it. When she takes her out, I never worry. I know without a shadow of doubt that she is in good hands. When I think of Ms. Hunt, she has the same calmness and gentleness that makes everybody feel welcome who comes in contact with her.
Sincerely, Ms. Smith (Mentee’s Aunt)

Thank you for helping me on my projects and taking me places, like the movies for my birthday and the children’s museum.
Love, Nijwa

We salute Ms. Shonta Hunt as our “2010 Mentor of the Year” for her outstanding service and dedication to her mentee, Nijwa and Project AWARE Mentoring Program.

The pair was also recognized by the Memphis Grizzlies Charitable Foundation – “Team Up Mentoring Initiative”. To view, please follow this link: http://teamupmemphis.org/index.php/mentor-profile/shonta

STEP UP 4 CHILDREN 2009

EVERY CHILD DESERVES A CHANCE!

On Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 1:00 pm, Project AWARE Mentoring Program (PAMP) through Families of Incarcerated Individuals, Inc. (FII) hosted its 3rd “Annual STEP UP 4 CHILDREN: Step Show Competition” at the gymnasium on the Historic LeMoyne-Owen College Campus located at 807 Walker Avenue. STEP UP 4 CHILDREN is a campaign to promote the importance of mentoring and community involvement to ensure that all children are given a fair chance in life. FII encourages mentoring through its Project AWARE Mentoring Program which pairs children and youth, who are affected by the incarceration of a parent or immediate family member, with trained mentors who can provide support, friendship, reinforcement, and counsel. To date, PAMP has more than 100 successful matches and has serviced over 1,000 families in the Shelby County area.

Events planned for the day included music and giveaways. This was no ordinary step show competition!!!! Competitors were some of the “best of the best” step teams in Memphis City and Shelby County Schools such as Fairley, Newberry, Highland Oaks, Lucie E. Campbell, and Doubletree elementary schools; KIPP Diamond Academy, Havenview, Hickory Ridge, Wooddale, and Ridgeway middle schools and Sheffield High School. Barry Jackson, President/CEO of the Memphis Youth Coalition, hosted the show. Helping to judge the show were representatives of FII, Inc community partners: Jeffrey Higgs (Lemoyne-Owen College Community Development Corporation), Pamela S. King (Cummins, Inc), Derwin Sisnett (Power Center Community Development Corporation) and Demetria Adair (City of Memphis – Office of Youth Services & Community Affairs). The participants were aware that they were stepping to make mentoring available to many children throughout Shelby County who have been affected by the incarceration of a loved one. All proceeds from this event will go toward enhancing and expanding the Project AWARE Mentoring Program. Over 500 supporters attended.
